What the Pho?!?
Restaurant Info: Pho Saigon has only been open since November of 2010. We were actually looking for a beauty salon and on our way to eat Mexican food when we spotted this hidden treasure. It is located at 1160 El Paseo Rd. #D 12-14, Las Cruces, NM 88001. It is in the old shopping plaza behind Long John Silver's and Burger King on El Paseo, a little closer to Goodyear Tire. It looks like an empty plaza but I promise it is there. Phone number: (575) 652-4326. Open 7 days, 9am to 10pm.
Dinero: Cash, card or check.
Atmosphere: It is a nice sized restaurant. No booths, but really comfortable tables and chairs. It has a really nice Vietnamese theme as far as the decorations. I felt really comfortable and had a great time eating here. Oh, and for my fellow OCD amigos, Mr. Clean would approve of the restaurant and bathrooms himself.
Customer service: Our server was extremely friendly and kept checking on us and refilling our drinks even though the restaurant was busy. A big two thumbs up for service. Our food came out quick and was noodle-licous!!!
thực phẩm (Food): We ate Pho. Pho what? Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of a clear meaty broth filled with rice noodles, cuts of meat, and topped with fresh green herbs. It is eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner and after eating at Pho Saigon I now know why.
We started off with some delicious eggrolls.
Esmeralda ordered the Noodle with Sliced Fresh Chicken Pho. All this food for only $6.99
Carrie ordered the Vermicelli w/BBQ Pork, Shrimp and Egg Roll.
We brought a friend with us this time. And if you can guess who it is we'll bring you along with us to our next LC Gorditas review!
Our mystery guest also had some Pho but they chose the Noodle with Rare Steak Pho. Yes, rare! The delicious beefy broth cooks the steak for you!
If you're not in the mood for soup, come for their rice dishes, house specials and family dinners. The food is amazing and you can't beat their prices. If you have never eaten Vietnamese food before you need to visit Pho Saigon...Pho Sho!
Caution:
1. Pho fills you up fast. Leave room for their Three Color dessert, it looked amazing.
2. You may see us there often, we plan on becoming Pho groupies.
3. You may find yourself substituting your vocabulary with the word 'pho'. I don't know why but I haven't been able to stop.

Le Rendez-vous Cafe and French Pastry
Dinero: They take cash, plastic and check.
Atmosphere: Is there a french phrase for "cute and cozy"? The cafe is just so. The room is filled with tables for two that can be easily pushed together to accomodate a large party. The noise is minimal so it's perfect for a lunch time date! The bathroom was super clean and roomy. The building is a little bit run down and there could be better lighting.
Customer Service: The staff are friendly and down to earth. The service was prompt, even during a busy lunchtime.
Comida: Or should we say Alimentaire. This is a french bakery and cafe serving salads, sandwiches, soup and a variety of breakfast dishes. This includes a full pastry bar that is tres delicieux (what is it about french that makes you want to write it in italics? Oui? Non?)
Esmer ordered the 1/2 roast beef sandwich with the french onion soup:
Mais...Oui? |
Esmer: "I love how they use Muenster Cheese!" Carrie: "What is 'monster' cheese?" |
Carrie ordered La Pan Bagnat- a yummy french dish popular in Nice, France (oh google, how you make us sound smart and well read!).
That is one roll of french goodness |
For dessert, we each ordered a croissant. Or, we might have ordered these while we were waiting for our lunch. You choose to believe what you want :).
Esmer picked the Almond croissant:
"Heaven, thy name is almond croissant" |
Carrie chose a chocolate croissant.
Before:
After:
Need we say more? |
Caution: 1. Chocolate croissants do funny things to people. They can cause irrepressible giggling, and chortling. And you may want to switch nationalities afterwards.

got pupusa?
Restaurant Info: Paola’s Bakery Café is located at 2300 N. Main Suite 205, Las Cruces, NM 88001. (575) 524-2025. Open Monday-Friday 7a.m. to 5p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Dinero: Cash and cards, sorry friends no checks. Menu prices listed run from $1 to the most expensive item on the menu being $6.95. Eat here and save some dinero…si!
Atmosphere: Paola’s is located in a plaza and is easily accessed from either N. Main or Madrid and there is plenty of parking. It’s a small café. It has 10 tables, each with 3-4 chairs, but there were enough tables for the lunch crowd. The walls are fashionably painted and the tables and chairs are a classic 1950’s style.
Customer service: The owner/manager will take your order and $ at the counter and deliver your food to your table. He is very friendly and makes you feel comfortable. He knew a lot of the customer’s names. Quick note: This means the food, prices, customer services is so good that you will be back for more. Order ahead and take your food to go.
Food: Everything you eat at Paola’s is made in their kitchen from their breads to their sauces.
Breakfast menu items include omelettes, burritos, croissant and panini sandwiches.
Panini sandwiches are served on freshly baked bread and choice of 1 side. Paninis: Cuban, Pastrami, Cheese, Ham & Cheese, Roast Beef, Grilled Chicken, Turkey Pesto, Muffuletta, Tuna and Grilled Veggie. Sides: Paola’s house salad, Greek salad, Garden salad or Macaroni salad.
Esmeralda had the Muffuletta Panini. It was muy delicioso! Carrie had the Grilled Chicken Panini and her exact words were, “Tastes like a bacon explosion!”
Salads: Paola’s House, Greek, Turkey Avocado, Pasta, Fruit, and Garden. We both ordered a side Paola’s House salad with our sandwich. Yum! I’m all for inexpensive gourmet salads.
Fresh homemade soup of the day and a daily Soup & ½ Sandwich special for $5.95.
Pupusas are a tasty, flat, healthier (not deep fried) version of a gordita. But just to set the record straight, we're totally not dissing the gordita. There is much to be said about occasionally eating deep fried goodness such as gorditas, french fries, etc. Before you start saying, "Not me, I'm all about healthy food,” let me remind you that you’re reading a blog about food. Stop being a closet gordita! Pupusas are $2.25 each and come with a cabbage salad called ‘curtido’ and a tomato based dipping sauce.
Your options are: Chicharron (pork rind) and queso (cheese), queso and green chile, queso and frijole (beans), queso and loroco, queso or plain ol’ chicharron. Don’t fear the pork, es muy good-o. The queso and green chile pupusa is best described as “hot and sexy”. Bakery: They have a variety of gourmet flavor empanadas, muffins, brownies, individual sized pineapple upside down cake, streusel, queso bread, flan, choco-flan (because if you’re gonna eat flan, you gotta eat the chocolate flan), bread pudding and tres leches cake. Their bakery items change daily and new items are introduced weekly.
Caution: 1. Save some room for dessert. Our lunch was so good that we ate it up and left no room for dessert…a sad day for LC Gorditas.
2. You’ll be back to try the many sandwiches and baked goods. Once is not enough.
3. Get ready to save some $$ at lunch.

Where's Caldo?
Restaurant Info: Enrique's Mexican Food. 830 W. Picacho Ave. Las Cruces, NM. Phone: (575) 647-0240. Its in the shopping mall on Picacho with antique stores, before Valley drive, but after Lion's Park.
Dinero: All of the dishes on the menu are under 8 dollars with the majority in the 4-6 range. The one downside: no plastic, only cash or check are accepted.
Atmosphere: Enrique's is a cozy little cafe. It is not fancy, so dress casual. The establishment is run by a husband and wife (The actual Enrique) who busy themselves taking orders and bringing out the food. The walls are painted a pleasant green and all the tables have matching flower table cloths. The decorations are not expensive but they are clean and well cared for. There is no music, just the hum of lunchtime chatter. Esmer did a bathroom check and reports that it was squeaky clean!
Customer Service: Enrique and Lydia (we think that is his wife's name) are incredibly prompt and polite. If you need refills on chips/salsa or drinks, you can help yourself or they'll do it for you if you ask. They speak both spanish and english, which is nice for Carrie to practice her spang-lish ("Can I have some aqua? Por favor?") and Esmer to sound awesome because she speaks both fluently (Asi!). Best leave a tip on the table when you are done as they don't require a tip when you pay!
Food: Enrique will start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, which you can refill as many times as you want.
The Caldo de Res (Beef Stew) is scrumptious. Seriously, there aren't enough adjectives to describe this soup. In the picture below you can see delicious broth filled with cooked veggies (carrots, corn, potatoes, cabbage, zucchini), and succulent chunks of beef. It also comes with corn or flour tortillas on the side (for scooping up the meat and veggies) and a plate of rice. The rice, which is cooked in a tasty broth with carrots and onions, will make you want to do a happy dance in your seat. Esmer has been here several times, and refuses to order anything else. Es la verdad!
Note: this is the "small" portion |
Carrie ordered the green enchiladas, one chicken and one beef. They were both good, but she recommends the chicken as it is the better of the two. The enchilada plate as you can see also comes with a side of beans and rice. The beans are liquid love and have obviously had lard added. Sorry if that grosses you out, but it makes the best beans. It’s been scientifically proven that eating lard releases feel good endorphins in your brain…just kidding, but your taste buds will be thanking you!

We all scream for ice cream and corn in a cup!
It’s summer and it’s muy caliente (really hot)! We thought we’d do a review on one of our favorite ice cream places in Las Cruces, Paleteria La Reyna Michoacána (La Michoacána for short). We’ve all gone to Dairy Queen, Caliches, Coldstone, etc. but this is a little different and worth visiting…more than once! It’s one of those unknown places in town that everyone should know about. For those who miss the street food you used to buy in Juarez or for those who were too scared to try it, Paleteria La Reyna Michoacána is the place to go. It's muy bueno (really good)!
Restaurant Info: Paleteria La Reyna Michoacána is located at 525 E. Madrid Avenue. It’s on the corner of Madrid and Solano in the Mesquite Junction Plaza by Apodaca Park. If you blink, you’ll miss it. The best directions I can give is that Alice the Burrito Lady is in the corner of the plaza.
Dinero: They accept cash and plastic. Sorry no checks and you have to spend at least $5 to use plastic. This shouldn’t be a problem for anyone as most of the time you go there wanting one thing and end up leaving with a couple more items than you planned.
Atmosphere: Piñatas galore! There are about 8 picnic style tables to sit on, which are very comfy. Bright decorations and friendly atmosphere. Most people take their goods home but you will see lots of people on dates and families with small children. The tv is usually on and when it's not there is very good Spanish music playing. I find myself wanting to dance while waiting in line or else drawn to the novela (Mexican soap opera) playing on the tv. Ice cream and a novela, excellent combination! On weekends you'll find the tv set to baseball or futbol (soccer). There's a little entertainment for everyone.
Bathroom check: The bathroom is very clean. The floors and tables are always clean and everything smells like Fabuloso (Mexican brand Mr. Clean). I love that smell!
Customer Service: There is always someone behind the counter and they’re quick to call for help when they get busy, which happens often. It’s a little busier in the summer but they’re really fast.
Food: First of all you should know that all the ice cream products and aguas are made in the kitchen of La Michoacána. Another reason we love this place is their extremely reasonable prices.
Paletas are a Mexican version of popsicles. They're all natural and made from real fruit, milk and sugar. There are two types of paletas, water or milk based. For $1 extra you can have your paleta dipped in chocolate and then they take the chocolate covered paleta and coat the chocolate in either pecans, coconut or candy sprinkles. This process is called ‘Esquimal’ like an Eskimo pie. Does that sound good? Well it is! My favorite paleta is strawberries and cream. Plain and simple, no chocolate. Carrie always gets a pistachio paleta and has it covered in chocolate and pecans. The paletas also come in pecan, vanilla, coconut, chocolate, cookies and cream, strawberry, pineapple, chocolate chip, guayaba, mango and banana. Here's a picture of Carrie's paleta. Please excuse the bite mark, as usual we forgot to take a picture.
Ice cream flavors include strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, pecan, coconut, cookies and cream, pistachio, caramel, chocolate chip and marshmallow. They sell by scoops on a cone or cup as well as banana splits and sundaes.
I have to admit that I’m not much of an ice-cream person but I do visit La Michoacána once a week in the summer for their aguas. Aguas literally means waters but they’re actually drinks made from fruit or rice. Just like the paletas, they’re either water or milk based. My favorite is the agua de melon (cantaloupe). It tastes like someone stuck a straw in a cantaloupe and you get to drink it...Yummers! They also have horchata, fruta (fruit), piña colada, sandia (watermelon) and lemonade aguas. All made from scratch. I suggest you pay the extra 50 cents skip the medium and get a large. They keep well in your fridge for a few days.
Agua de melon pic:
Miscellaneous but really good things to try are their corn in a cup, nachos, chicharones (no not pork rinds, they’re actually flour based pin-wheeled shaped snacks that you cover in lemon and chile), mangos on a stick, strawberries and cream (either fresh or frozen), jicama, Mexican Coke (with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup) and hot dogs. If you see people eating various things covered in nacho cheese, that’s normal and you should try it. Doritos or potato chips covered in nacho cheese are a good thing. You may have to spend a little more time on your elliptical that day, but it will have been worth it. Caution:
1.Not the place to go when your heart is broken and you feel like being an emotional eater…or maybe it is the place to go. You decide.
2.If you have a fear of piñatas, beware. This ice cream place also doubles as a piñata store. I love sitting by the Sponge Bob piñata. It makes me feel peaceful.
3. Corn in a cup is addicting. I don’t know what they do to it but it’s magical.

I tasted India, and it was good
A few weeks ago, a friend tipped us off about the daily lunch buffet at A Taste of India. Finding ourselves on campus recently for a very long and boring seminar, we decided to nurse our headaches with tandoori chicken and garlic naan.
Restaurant info: 1001 East University Avenue (in the Kinko's plaza). (575) 532-1700.
Dinero: Plastic, Cash, Check
Atmosphere: The tables and tile floors looked expensive. However, we all agreed that it was a bit "dark" and they could have benefited from some more lighting at the tables. There was no music in the dining area, but instead some music coming from the kitchen. It was 1/3 to 1/2 full as usual. I've been here a few times before and it is almost always nearly empty, so I'm not sure how they continue to do business. It would be a shame if this restaurant closed down, so give it a try!
Bathroom check: The bathroom was new and well designed. The doors were not your cheap partitions you see everywhere. Instead they were made with a pretty dark wood. The sink was small and Esmer said she saw a couple of paper towels on the floor. Since, they aren't that busy, we have to take a point off for not checking the bathroom and keeping it clean.
Customer Service: There was one waiter manning the show. He stayed behind the counter and nodded us toward chairs when we came in. He was very prompt to come and ask our drinks, bring us pipping hot naan (yummy Indian bread) and refill our drinks. It took a little longer than usual to pay and get our receipts, but still he did a pretty excellent job for being on his own.

Lunch and a Tattoo
Carrie ordered the Lamb French Dip. Pieces of lamb served on Moroccan bread with sweet caramelized onions. It comes with potatoes, watermelon and Au Jus. She loved it. Her only complaint was feeling pretty "lamby" after eating the sandwich. She had a hard time getting the lamb smell off of her hands. I suggested she go use the two soap dispensers in the bathroom. I had the Chicken Kebab with Cous Cous. It was delish! The cous cous was soft and buttery and the chicken was perfectly spiced. I was happily full when Carrie talked me into trying the orange cake. All that I could say after one bite was, "WOW!" Carrie said, "I've never seen you react like that, it takes a lot to impress the Smersy." This cake is just that, impressive! It's layers of white cake, whipped cream frosting, orange zest marmalade drizzled with chocolate. You have to try this cake! One piece is enough for two people because it's muy bueno.
Carrie's check came out to $19 and mine was $12 and that's minus a drink. We only had water. That's a bit pricey for lunch. So would I go there again? For the cake, si! Shem's should seriously consider a lunch menu with lunch prices that compete with the other local establishments in Las Cruces.
Caution: 1. The food was good, but a bit pricey for poor social workers. 2. If you're right handed and you've decided to have your free Henna tattoo put on your right hand you may have to learn to eat with your left hand.Wednesday, May 12, 2010
Tour of Carbitaly
Location: Telshor (in front of Sportsman's Warehouse, Home Depot)
Dinero: cash, check, card
Atmosphere: We got there a little after 4:30 and were surprised to be seated in just under five minutes. The waiting area is pretty small. It began to fill up quickly just after we arrived. The decorations are all new and cute, I particularly liked some of the wall tiling. Esmer did a bathroom check, and unfortunately found it to be all the way in the back, past the busy kitchen doors.
Cleanliness: Like I said, everything is new since it just opened. So we have to give it top marks here.
Customer Service: This was a mixture. Our hostess seemed young and inexperienced. She kept forgetting to hand out buzzers. But another hostess stepped in to fix the mix up. Our waitress was incredibly nervous (her first day she told us) and even said "they should fire me!" when she brought me an iced tea instead of a raspberry lemonade. I felt bad for her so I sampled the tea to make sure (Esmer thinks I just wanted to break the Word of Wisdom). But, other than this slight mix up, the service was excellent. A random server even refilled Esmer's drink during our meal.
Comida: We went for the salad instead of soup for our breadsticks. We got the cheese grated over the top, saying "estop" to our server at just the right time! Esmer went with the spaghetti and meatballs, and the server even special ordered the five cheese marinara sauce for her spaghetti instead of the meat sauce (how nice!). I have a terrible time making up my mind, so I decided try a little of everything and got the tour of italy (includes: fettucini alfredo, lasagna, and chicken parmesan). Esmer loved her sauce but thought that the meatballs do not compare to Lorenzos'. Carrie is right, Lorenzo's are better. My alfredo sauce was yummy and so was the lasagna. I thought the chicken parmesan tasted a bit like it came from the freezer and was just heated up. The helpings were very large. After about 2 1/2 bites Esmer announced she was full. We both took home boxes for lunch tomorrow. The server even wrote what we ordered on our boxes, just in case we forgot what meatballs or chicken parmesan look like.
Cost: My meal total was a staggering 22 bucks (including tip)! The bright side is that it could have easily fed two. Esmer's rang in at 18 bucks, but it would have been harder to share. Maybe cut the meatballs in half? So is it worth the price you are probably wondering? We say yes, but only on special occasions when you want to spend a lot of money.
Caution:
1. If you are thirsty, you won't be able to stop at one glass of raspberry lemonade (yeah, try 3 here!)
2. Prepare for a sudden irresistible desire to take a nap afterward.
3. Comfy jeans, preferably with an easy to undo top button, are an asset.
4. When your BFF has been on a protein-only diet, the sudden influx of carbs may cause them to say things like, "I'm such a meatball whore!"

You have charbroil on your cheek!
Dinero: They take cash or cards. Sorry, no checks.
Atmosphere: Casual. You order at the left side counter and when they call your number you pick up your food at the right side counter. The tables are your typical square Formica tables with cushioned chairs. Yes, the chairs could use a bit of patching but all in all it was comfortable. I have to say that the music played at Pepe’s was quite refreshing. It ranges from Juanes to The Killers. As we were exiting the restaurant Carrie said, “They’re playing Keane!” Yes indeed, they were!
Cleanliness: I’m a strong believer in checking a restaurant’s bathroom. Basically, a bathroom will tell you how clean the kitchen is. The same mop and cleaning supplies are used in the entire restaurant. I did a bathroom check and found that it was clean and well stocked with soap, tp and paper towels. Nice to know, since I’m assuming the employees use the same bathroom.
Customer Service: It was my first time at Pepe’s and considering we went during lunch, the cashier was very friendly and answered my questions. Our number was called within 5 minutes of placing our order. Very impressive!
They have an $8.99 dark meat chicken special that comes with a side of Charro beans and Spanish rice. Also included in the special are 8 tortillas, corn or flour. Drinks are separate and cost $2 each with free refills. We ended up paying almost $14 for the special and two drinks, $7 a piece. Not too shabby considering the current prices at other restaurants. They also have a salsa bar with guacamole salsa, green chile salsa (dang my mouth is on fire), red chile salsa (does anyone have Tums?), pico de gallo, basic Mexican salsa (very whimpy), limes, chopped cucumbers and those weird red onions in vinegar (blah!). You can see the plate in the picture, the quality is not very good because we took it with a cell phone, and you can see nibbles on the chicken because we were very hungry and only remembered the picture just in time!
I went with the corn tortillas, Carrie tried the flour. I’m really picky about corn tortillas. There is nothing more disappointing than ordering tortillas from a Mexican restaurant and biting into a store bought tortilla. I can always taste and smell the preservatives in store bought corn tortillas…yuck! I have to admit that I wasn’t sure about the origin of their corn tortillas. I could definitely smell the lime in them but they didn’t taste as fresh as the tortillas you can buy in the many Mexican tortillerias in Las Cruces. I ate one of Carrie’s flour tortillas…YUM! I was seriously wishing I carried a stick of butter in my purse so I could eat a flour tortilla with butter, yes they were that good! So definitely order the flour and not the corn. I’m not much of a chicken dark meat person but as Carrie stated after a couple of bites, “This chicken is DELISH!!!”
The food is given to you on a tray along with plastic ware and paper plates. You may want to triple up the paper plates as the beans will soak through the first two plates and leave a soggy mess on the table. The Spanish rice was moist and had a wonderful cumin aroma. Carrie thought the beans were a wee bit undercooked, I agree. It may have just been an off day for the cook. I will say this much, the beans had a good spice to them, not too hot but just perfect. Also, we quickly found out that 3 people could have shared this meal. I ended up taking two pieces of chicken home with me for dinner and we threw away the leftover rice and beans. Last but not least, it’s charbroiled…hello healthy!
Caution:
1. After a few bites of their chicken you may end up with charbroil on your cheeks. This is where you truly appreciate your BFF for telling you, “You have charbroil on your cheek.”
2. Vegans and Vegetarians stay away…you will change your lifestyle once you get a whiff of the charbroiled chicken.
3. Don’t eat the guacamole salsa too fast or it’ll end up on your cardi (cardigan). It must be magic guacamole salsa because it dried clear. J
